Getting your online bank account up and running

Should you be looking to apply for a current account online, there is every chance you will want to know in advance what the process is likely to involve and what information you are going to need to have available.

First of all, you'll need to be able to confirm that you are a UK resident and are over 18 years old - of course, this will depend on the type of bank account you are trying to open. But no matter what your age bracket, most providers will have a selection of products you'll want to check out before you make your final decision.

After you've had the chance to compare bank accounts and choose one that suits your needs, you will be asked if you would like to apply. This process should not take too long and can be done online, but you will need to have information to hand in advance. In addition to your name, address and nationality, you could be asked about how many children you have and if there is a daytime contact telephone number on which you can be reached. This could be a home and/or mobile number, but if you do have a line at work it may be worth providing this as it will mean the bank can get in touch if there are any issues that arise regarding your application. Most providers will offer the chance to state how you would like to be contacted in this event.

For those who have not been living at their current address for a particularly long time, it will be necessary to provide some previous addresses. Therefore, having these available - complete with those tricky to remember old postcodes - is a good idea. Provided you do have all this information available, you should find you are able to move on to the next stage of the process, which might be adding your employment details. Salary details could also be asked for at this point, as the bank will be keen to match you with a product that is suited to you as an individual, with some current accounts offering extra facilities for those with larger incomes. However, whether or not you are going to need a cheque book, overdraft or debit card could come up during the application process, regardless of your salary.

You will be asked to confirm all of the details you've entered, state that they are correct and make any changes if necessary before agreeing to the terms and conditions of the application. You might also like to indicate if you're happy for related partners of the bank to contact you for offers on other products and services. Of course, all banks differ slightly in their exact approach, but these are some of the main things you can expect should you be looking to set up your new account over the internet. Once this is all done you will just need to sit back and wait to see if you have been successful.
